I thought that Colgate-Palmolive had stopped animal tests? Why is it still included on the “do test” list?

We have been in communication with Colgate for several years. In March 1999, Colgate-Palmolive established a moratorium on animal testing for adult personal care products (this includes deodorants, shampoos, fragrances, and shaving creams). This is wonderful news.

Colgate is still using animals in the testing of fluoride for its toothpaste. However, it is making efforts to get a non-animal test protocol for fluoride into a standard accepted form for the FDA's approval.

PETA is not putting Colgate on our cruelty-free lists, nor are we recommending that consumers buy its products. Colgate has, however, taken significant steps toward eliminating animal suffering by ending the majority of its animal tests. We feel it is important to recognize the meaningful steps that any individual or company takes in helping animals.

Colgate is the second top-selling personal care company in the United States—second only to Procter & Gamble (P&G). Most importantly, Colgate has included product ingredients in its moratorium on adult personal-care products, a step that P&G still refuses to take.

We do feel that the progress being made is significant. We will meet with Colgate several times a year, and the company has pledged to share information with us honestly and openly.

Please send a polite letter to Colgate-Palmolive's chairperson, encouraging him to make a permanent commitment to never again testing on animals. Letters should be addressed to:
